Elmer Wiechert, 84, of Bennington, died on October 4, 2026, at home on the farm where he was born.

Elmer farmed corn, beans and wheat on 300 acres for forty years, then sold the land to his nephew and bought the hardware store on Main Street, because, he said, he was not ready to sit down. He ran it for 22 years and knew where every bolt was without looking.

He was a volunteer firefighter for three decades, a dependable bass in the community choir and the first one at any neighbor’s door after a storm.

He is survived by his wife, three daughters, seven grandchildren and one very spoiled dog.

Service

The funeral was held Friday, October 9, at 10:30am in the Vossler chapel, with burial in the town cemetery. The recording of the livestream is available from the family.

Memorials

Gifts to the volunteer fire department are welcome.
